How to verify Telebirr transactions

Telebirr is Ethio Telecom's mobile money service and the most widely used digital wallet in Ethiopia. Telebirr receipts are published as public HTML pages accessible via a URL containing only the transaction reference number. The endpoint is geo-blocked to Ethiopian IP addresses.

Who this route is for

  • Shops confirming Telebirr payments at the counter
  • Online stores verifying Telebirr payments before fulfillment
  • Delivery services validating payment before handover
  • Marketplaces integrating Telebirr verification via API

Required fields

  • Transaction ID
  • Format: 2-3 letter prefix followed by 6-8 alphanumeric characters (e.g. DET8FJGUJ4, CHQ0FJ403O) (e.g. DET8FJGUJ4)

Step-by-step

  1. 01Get the transaction reference from the customer's Telebirr SMS or receipt
  2. 02The reference starts with a 2-3 letter prefix (DET, CHQ, DAB, DEL, ADQ, etc.)
  3. 03LIQverify fetches the receipt from Telebirr's public endpoint and extracts payment data

What this verification route checks

LIQverify starts a live request to Telebirr using their public receipt endpoint. A successful check returns structured payment data — parties, amount, time, and any extra fields the bank or wallet exposes.

How to read the result

Confirmed means the bank record matched. Failed shows a clear reason (format, not found, network, or geo-block). Never treat a screenshot alone as proof — only the bank confirmation counts.

Edited or forged screenshots

Always paste the reference (or use QR / photo OCR) and let LIQverify re-check the bank. Do not trust a polished image without a live confirmation.

Provider latency or geo-block

Telebirr receipts can be blocked outside Ethiopia. Use LIQverify's Ethiopia proxy when configured, or retry from an Ethiopian network if the bank host is slow or unreachable.

FAQ

What does a Telebirr reference number look like?

Telebirr transaction references start with a 2-3 letter prefix followed by 6-8 alphanumeric characters. Common prefixes include DET, CHQ, DAB, DEL, and ADQ. The full reference is sent via SMS to both payer and receiver after each transaction.

Why does Telebirr verification fail from outside Ethiopia?

Telebirr's receipt endpoint (transactioninfo.ethiotelecom.et) blocks requests from IP addresses outside Ethiopia. This is a network-level restriction. LIQverify provides a fallback URL so users on Ethiopian networks can open the receipt directly in their browser.

Can I self-host LIQverify for Telebirr verification?

Yes. Running LIQverify on a server with an Ethiopian IP address (or using X-Forwarded-For with an Ethiopian IP from a residential connection) bypasses the geo-block. See the Docker self-hosting guide in the GitHub repository.

Does Telebirr charge for receipt verification?

The Telebirr receipt URL is public and returns an HTML page with transaction details. LIQverify confirms against that official source.
